Readeck
Readeck is one of the nicest read-it-later projects of the last few years. It’s open source, modern, and made to be self-hosted.
If you like running your own server (backups, updates, monitoring), it’s a good option.
Self-hosted or hosted?
The choice is mostly about who maintains the server:
- self-hosting: you control everything, and you do the maintenance;
- a hosted service: you pay a small subscription and someone else keeps it running.
wallabag.it is the second one. And since wallabag is open source too, you can host it yourself one day if you want.
What wallabag.it does
- It saves the whole article, not just the link. If the page disappears, you still have it.
- You read on the web, on Android, on iOS, and on Kobo or PocketBook e-readers. Offline too.
- Tags, search, highlights and annotations.
- You can export everything whenever you want: PDF, ePUB, mobi, JSON, CSV…
- It’s hosted in Europe. No ads, no tracking: it’s paid for by subscriptions.
- It’s the open-source wallabag, the project I started in 2013. If you’d rather host it yourself, you can.
